Shopkeepers - Today's internship for tomorrow's stars

You might know them as interns. We know them as keepers... Shopkeepers.

Here at The Shopper Agency we know what it takes to succeed in the marketing industry. Bright, experienced and determined teams. Teams made of individual stars that work collectively on their customer’s common goals.

The Shopper Agency created its first internship program in 2012, with the aim of working with schools, colleges and universities to…

  1. Introduce students to the retail and shopper marketing industry.
  2. Meet and build a relationship with the stars of the future.
  3. Give young talent the opportunity to work closely with experienced peers, global brands and retailers and industry specialists.

We look for those who approach things differently. Those who are curious, inventive, collaborative and confident. We are always looking to progress and avoid the status quo.

Whilst on the subject of young and ambitious students with a thirst for knowledge, let us introduce you to our latest recruits, the shopkeeper’s class of 2019.

From the Retail Design team, introducing Jamie, our 3D intern.

Hi, I’m Jamie Scanlon and I’m from Dewsbury, I am currently studying Product Design at The University of Huddersfield.

What interested you in your chosen internship here at The Shopper Agency?

I was very interested to learn more about how 3D Design interacts with the retail world; working in retail part-time, I’ve always been fascinated with the crossover between the two things I do. The Shopper Agency stood out to me immediately, as it had a fresh and innovative approach to modern-day shopper marketing.

What kind of shopper are you?

I do a lot of my shopping online, Amazon and ASOS are both must-haves and I have premium next-day delivery services for both. I am always happy to browse in-store sales in my spare time, as you never know what could catch your eye.

What’s your favourite shop?

I am a massive fan of stationery and home items so probably either Paperchase or Urban Outfitters, for the clothing aspect as well. I like the more organic atmosphere Urban Outfitters has in comparison to standard clothing stores, which are just rows of hanging clothes.

How would your friends describe you?

I guess my friends would describe me as outgoing, funny and always up for a laugh. But a bit of a stress-head at some points; can go from zero to one hundred on the stress-level pretty quickly!

What makes you smile?

Getting home after a long day and seeing friends; whether it’s going out or just watching TV and eating takeaway food.

And from the Shopper Communications team, introducing Abigail, our 2D intern.

Hi, I’m Abigail Lee and I am from Wakefield/Leeds and am currently studying Graphic Design at Huddersfield University.

What interested you in your chosen internship here at The Shopper Agency?

I am excited to work on 2D design at the agency because I think I will learn a lot and I love design. I have always had a passion for it, so I am thrilled to be pursuing my design career!

What kind of shopper are you?

I shop online a lot, but also enjoy hitting the high street on the search for bargains!

What’s your favourite shop?

I love shopping on ASOS because of their wide variety of brands, but also love getting a right bargain at Primark.

How would your friends describe you?

I think my friends would describe me as a fun, crazy plant-lady and weird!

What makes you smile?

Being with my friends, plants and a good old brew at the end of the day.

But don’t just hear it from our new recruits, find out what our previous interns thought of their time at The Shopper Agency.

Adam, 3D Design intern, class of 2017:

Technically, I improved my CAD skills on 3Ds Max and InDesign skills. From more of a personal level, I now am a lot more confident going into my next job, as I know how the design sector operates. I also know more technical terms and can understand in depth how the design process works.

Overall I was really pleased with my placement and would recommend to anyone looking for an internship, to apply at The Shopper Agency; it was a great experience and I loved my time there.

Ben, 2D Design intern, class of 2018:

My placement year has given me an opportunity to learn skills that I wouldn't pick up at university, such as dealing with clients, problem-solving as a team and working to strict deadlines. These skills will all help me greatly when I start back at university in September. Working at The Shopper Agency has improved my knowledge of the Adobe creative suite, allowing me to maximise the quality of the work that I produce. Alongside the technical aspects of the placement, I feel that my time at The Shopper Agency has also improved my personal skills, such as knowing how to engage and interact with team members during client meetings.

Greta, Planning intern, class of 2018:

During my time at The Shopper Agency, I discovered more about a working environment, particularly the structure of an agency, adapting to new and unforeseen circumstances and working more independently. I also learnt to research, through both primary and secondary sources and apply the marketing theory that I learnt at university. Finally, I learnt how to organise my working day and improve my time-management skills, which will prove useful in both professional and personal life. My placement was a great experience and a chance to discover the reality of working life, with an amazing, talented team who were all very welcoming and supportive. I felt very at home there from the start and was taught an awful lot over the year.

Our intern programme sees students working on real projects, alongside our experienced staff and with our prestigious clients, so they will learn new skills doing real-life work.
